KMS Auto Discovery

A few days ago in my office precisely to the activation of windows having problems. I had a chance to find out the source of these problems exist where and it turns out the product key has been used on servers that have been deleted from the domain. See KMS activation and troubleshooting.

Your DNS domain can be configured so that your workstations will automatically locate the KMS service. This method is called "auto discovery". Client computers use DNS SRV records to automatically locate the KMS service. The SRV records need to be appended to your DNS domain configuration. Configuring your DNS domain for KMS auto discovery with replacing <your DNS domain> with the one in which your workstations are registered:

_vlmcs._tcp.<your DNS domain>. 3600 IN SRV 0 100 1688 hostname
  • Service name: vlmcs (this is what Microsoft decided to call it)
  • Protocol: TCP
  • Domain in which service is to be available: <your DNS domain>
  • Time-to-live: 3600 seconds (recommended by Microsoft)
  • Record type: SRV
  • DNS priority: 0
  • DNS weight: 100
  • Service port number: 1688
  • Hostname: test1.testing.com, test2.testing.com

Here are ways to add a server that uses KMS:
  • On Start Menu > All Programs > Administrative Tools > DNS.
  • In dnsmgmt, create 'Other New Records'.
  • Choose Service Location (SRV) in Resource Record Type, and then create record.
  • Fill the service, protocol, priority, weight, port number and host fields, and then click 'Ok'.

For example, if your workstations are registered in the testing.com DNS domain, you will need to request that the following be appended to the testing.com domain:

_vlmcs._tcp.testing.com. 3600 IN SRV 0 100 1688 test1.testing.com.
_vlmcs._tcp.testing.com. 3600 IN SRV 0 100 1688 test2.testing.com.
