KMS Activation and Troubleshooting

Try checking if your DNS domain is configured for KMS, here is the command to check if a particular DNS domain has been configured for KMS, enter the command:

nslookup -type=srv _vlmcs._tcp.<your DNS domain>

For example, the output when checking the test1.testing.com domain:

Checking a computer's license and activation configuration, you can display the computer's license and activation configuration with this following command:

cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -dli

Here is the output a computer that has been successfully activated looks:

You will have 4 KMS keys in your Volume Licensing website:
  1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Data Ctr/Itan KMS C.
  2. Windows Server 2008R2 Std/Ent KMS B.
  3. Windows Web Server 2008R2 KMS A.
  4. Windows 7 - KMS.
If KMS Server not appearing In SLMGR.VBS output, you can either use the built in Administrator account or disable Admin Approval Mode for members of the Administrators group. By default, the built in Administrator account does not have a password set and is disabled. You will need to set a password, enable the account, and then log on using the account. The other method is to disable Admin Approval Mode for members of the Administrators group by performing the following steps (you could also apply a group policy):
  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Switch to Classic View.
  • Open Administrative Tools.
  • Open Local Security Policy.
  • Navigate to Local Policies -> Security Options.
  • Double-click on User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode.
  • Set it to Disabled.
  • Reboot.
  • Log on with an account that is a member of the Administrators group.

Few of Type slmgr for a list of commands:
  • slmgr -ipk PRODUCTKEYGOESHERE (Use the KMS key from MVLS)
  • slmgr -ato (Activates the KMS key)
  • slmgr -sdns (Enable DNS publishing of a _SRV record for the KMS)
  • slmgr -dli (display license information)
When you install the clients for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, do not type any product keys into the image. The default key that is on the disk will authenticate with the KMS.

Notes:
  • KMS keys are for the service.
  • MAK keys are manual activations.
  • Key pre-installed on the MVLS disc will automatically work.
KMS will not work until 25 clients authenticate with it. The message when you click "Activate windows now" will say "You have not reached the required amount of clients" or something along those lines. Also see how kms auto-discovery.
